Interior Design Mirdif
Kat Black Design Studio provides interior design and renovation services for villas and homes across Mirdif, one of Dubai’s most established and most community-rooted residential areas, popular with both UAE national families and long-term expatriate residents who value its relaxed pace, its established schools and community infrastructure and its strong sense of neighbourhood identity. Mirdif is one of the few areas of Dubai where the residential character has genuinely matured over decades rather than appearing fully formed as a masterplan development: the community’s older properties, many of which were built in the 1990s and early 2000s, carry the warmth of an established neighbourhood that newer planned communities are still working towards. Interior design and renovation in Mirdif is, more than in any other Dubai community, driven by the desire to modernise and upgrade a much-loved home rather than to create a status statement or to achieve a globally benchmarked luxury standard. The brief is personal and domestic, and Kat Black Design Studio serves it with the same care and capability as the studio’s most aspirationally positioned luxury commissions.
Mirdif Design Approach
Interior design for Mirdif villas requires a specific sensitivity to the character of the existing properties and the genuine community rootedness of their owners. A Mirdif renovation client is typically a family who has lived in the same villa for 10 to 20 years and wants to transform it into a more comfortable, more functional and more visually attractive home, without losing the sense of familiarity and domestic warmth that has accumulated over years of family life within its walls. This is a more nuanced brief than a purely aesthetic renovation, because it requires the design to make the home feel new and improved whilst also feeling continuous with the family’s experience of the space.
Kat Black Design Studio’s Mirdif approach begins with a careful listening process at the initial consultation: understanding how the family uses each room, what they find frustrating about the current layout and specification, what aspects of the home they want to preserve, and what they want to feel when the renovation is complete. The design responds to these specific, personal requirements rather than applying a generic contemporary renovation aesthetic over a home that has a different and more intimate character.
Practically, Mirdif villa renovation briefs at the studio consistently address the kitchen as the primary investment (the room that has the most impact on daily quality of life and on the family’s enjoyment of the home), the bathrooms as the secondary investment (the spaces that show their age most clearly and that a specification upgrade transforms most dramatically), the flooring throughout (from the original ceramic tile that characterises most Mirdif villas of the 1990s and 2000s to a contemporary large-format porcelain or engineered hardwood), and the garden as the third priority where budget allows (creating the outdoor living space that Mirdif’s family character and its generous plot sizes make genuinely possible).
Our Expertise
Villa Renovation
Villa renovation is the dominant service at Kat Black Design Studio in Mirdif, reflecting the community’s age profile and the renovation demand that builds up over the 15 to 25-year property lifecycle that characterises much of Mirdif’s established villa stock. The renovation brief in Mirdif spans a wide range of scope and investment levels, from a targeted kitchen and master bathroom upgrade over a 6 to 8-week programme to a comprehensive whole-villa renovation addressing structure, all finishes, MEP upgrades and the garden over a programme of 16 to 24 weeks.
Structural modifications to Mirdif villas, where required, are managed through the Dubai Municipality structural permit process. Mirdif does not fall within an Emaar-managed community and therefore does not require an Emaar community NOC; the DM structural permit process is the sole regulatory pathway for structural works within the area. Kat Black Design Studio manages the DM permit application as a standard part of every Mirdif renovation commission involving structural works. The most commonly requested structural modification in Mirdif is the removal of the wall between the kitchen and the family room to create the open-plan kitchen-family-dining arrangement that has become the standard expectation in Dubai’s family villa market across all community types and price points.
Bathroom renovation in Mirdif villas typically covers a full strip-out of the original tile and sanitaryware, installation of large-format porcelain in a warm contemporary tone, new sanitaryware from Duravit, Grohe or Hansgrohe to replace the original builder-grade fittings, a shower system upgrade (typically from a fixed overhead shower to a thermostatic system with a rainfall head and a handheld), new LED vanity lighting and a new mirror or mirrored cabinet. This scope of works in a standard Mirdif bathroom of 6 to 10 square metres is typically completed within 2 to 3 weeks and costs in the range of AED 25,000 to AED 55,000 depending on the tile specification and sanitaryware selection.

Design
Community Character
Mirdif’s community character is one of the most specific and most authentically local residential atmospheres in Dubai. The community’s mixture of UAE national villas on larger plots and expatriate family homes on more compact ones creates a neighbourhood feel that is genuinely diverse and genuinely community-oriented in ways that the masterplan villa communities of Dubai Hills and Arabian Ranches, for all their careful community planning, have not yet fully achieved. The proximity of Mushrif Park, the wildlife park, the community’s well-established schools (including Uptown School, Dubai International Academy and Mirdif Private School), and the Mirdif City Centre mall creates a self-contained community infrastructure that reduces the dependence on car travel that characterises most of Dubai’s residential landscape.
Kat Black Design Studio’s work in Mirdif reflects the community’s character: the studio serves both UAE national families undertaking traditional Arabic villa renovations with full majlis redesigns and expatriate family households seeking a warm, functional contemporary renovation that makes their long-term Mirdif home feel fresh and new without losing its familial warmth. The studio’s majlis design service, documented, is a specific element of the Mirdif service offering, serving the community’s significant UAE national client base with culturally informed traditional and contemporary Arabic reception room design.design-dubai

Our Mirdif Interior Design Projects
Completed Mirdif projects at Kat Black Design Studio include a comprehensive villa renovation for a UAE national family that had lived in the property for 18 years, covering a complete kitchen replacement in a warm cream lacquer cabinetry system with a granite worktop and a new Sub-Zero refrigerator, a full majlis renovation with new floor tiling in a travertine-effect large-format porcelain, new diwan seating in a hand-embroidered cream and gold fabric, a new decorative plasterwork ceiling and updated lighting, master bathroom renovation in a large-format marble-effect porcelain with a Hansgrohe thermostatic shower, and repainting throughout in a warm ivory and soft white palette; and an expatriate family villa kitchen and family room renovation, covering the removal of the wall between the two spaces, installation of a new open-plan kitchen in a white shaker cabinetry system with a quartz worktop and Neff appliances, new engineered oak flooring throughout the ground floor and repainting in a contemporary warm white and stone palette. Both projects were delivered with the families in residence using phased programmes. Contact the studio for project details.
